Illinois led for the first six-and-a-half innings but No. 23 Ohio State pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh without a ball leaving the infield and two more in the eighth as the Buckeyes nipped the Illini, 7-4 in front of 4,575 fans at Huntington Park. Gaynor Named To BIG EAST Baseball Honor Roll
PISCATAWAY, N.J. Rutgers junior pitcher Casey Gaynor (Toms River, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Baseball Honor Roll, the league announced Monday. The Scarlet Knight pitched eight shutout innings and struck out seven, while allowing just five hits to help the Scarlet Knights post a 2-0 victory over Cincinnati in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Pena HR off Santana gets Rays past Mets (AP)
Johan Santana was back in fine form. That still wasn't good enough to beat James Shields and the Tampa Bay Rays. Carlos Pena hit a tiebreaking homer off Santana in the seventh inning Saturday, sending Shields and the Rays to a rainy 3-1 victory over the New York Mets. "We wanted to win one for him," Pena said.

Padres' Young to join Peavy on disabled list
Right-hander Chris Young is heading to the 15-day disabled list, meaning the struggling Padres' top two pitchers will be out of action.
Young has been bothered by inflammation in his pitching shoulder for his last four starts. He'll go on the DL on Friday. He had a second cortisone shot on Wednesday night.
Ace Jake Peavy was placed on the DL on Saturday, a day after learning he would be sidelined at least a month because of a strained tendon behind his right ankle.

Former All-Star reliever Brendan Donnelly was released from his minor league contract by the Texas Rangers. Donnelly was a key setup man for the Angels during three trips to the playoffs from 2002-05 that included a World Series title. He became a free agent Thursday. Illinois junior shortstop Brandon Wikoff (Peoria, Ill.) was named to the Big East/Big Ten Challenge All-Tournament team and sophomore designated hitter Pete Cappetta (Lisle, Ill.) was named honorable mention All-Tournament by CollegeBaseball360.com. The Scarlet Knights will wear hats with DW stitched on the side in honor of the late Darrin Winston, who passed away suddenly last August. BTN announces baseball, softball schedule

First baseman Tony Clark is returning to the Arizona Diamondbacks, agreeing Friday to an $800,000, one-year contract.
The 36-year-old Clark played for Arizona from 2005-2007 and had a prominent role on the 2007 NL West champions. He left after that season to sign with San Diego but returned to the Diamondbacks last July. Clark hit .225 with three home runs and 24 RBIs in 108 games with San Diego and Arizona last year.
