After being no-hit for six innings, Illinois got on the board in the seventh and exploded with a seven-run eighth inning to defeat Eastern Kentucky, 8-6, in the opening game of the Illini's annual Spring Trip at the IMG Academies. Left fielder Casey McMurray went 2-for-5 including the two-run single that put Illinois ahead for good and designated hitter Daniel Webb was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Starter Kevin Manson struck out a career-high seven in a career-long 6 2/3 innings.

Reed Johnson was an immediate hit in his Chicago Cubs debut. Two days after he was released by Toronto, Johnson agreed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract with the Cubs and then got two hits, including a double, and scored twice Tuesday in a 7-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants. "I had three days off and to play a full nine innings, it's good to get all the flight out of me," Johnson said.
Former major leaguer Jim Leyritz is being sued in Broward County for wrongful death in connection with a fatal traffic accident in December.
The lawsuit asking for at least $15,000 in damages was filed Tuesday by the family of 30-year-old Fredia Ann Veitch. Leyritz has previously pleaded not guilty to DUI manslaughter charges stemming from the Dec. 28 accident.
Police say Leyritz was drunk when he ran a red light in his sport utility vehicle and caused the crash.
Monday's MLB news briefs: Phillies closer Brad Lidge will start the regular season on the 15-day disabled list while he rehabilitates his knee following arthroscopic surgery last month.

The defending BIG EAST Conference regular-season and tournament champion Rutgers baseball team was picked to finish fourth in the 12-team conference in a vote by the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own team. Junior first baseman Tom Edwards (Caldwell, N.J.) was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
