Illini Drop Hard-Fought Game to #23 Ohio State, 7-4

Illinois led for the first six-and-a-half innings but No. 23 Ohio State pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh without a ball leaving the infield and two more in the eighth as the Buckeyes nipped the Illini, 7-4 in front of 4,575 fans at Huntington Park. Catcher Aaron Johnson (Sussex Corner, New Brunswick) was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs, and right fielder Pete Cappetta (Lisle, Ill.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Illini move on to face the winner of Friday's elimination game between sixth-seeded Purdue and second-seeded Minnesota in another elimination game at 2:35 p.m. CT.

Gaynor Named To BIG EAST Baseball Honor Roll

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers junior pitcher Casey Gaynor (Toms River, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Baseball Honor Roll, the league announced Monday. The Scarlet Knight pitched eight shutout innings and struck out seven, while allowing just five hits to help the Scarlet Knights post a 2-0 victory over Cincinnati in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Pena HR off Santana gets Rays past Mets (AP)

Johan Santana was back in fine form. That still wasn't good enough to beat James Shields and the Tampa Bay Rays. Carlos Pena hit a tiebreaking homer off Santana in the seventh inning Saturday, sending Shields and the Rays to a rainy 3-1 victory over the New York Mets. "We wanted to win one for him," Pena said.

Padres' Young to join Peavy on disabled list

Right-hander Chris Young is heading to the 15-day disabled list, meaning the struggling Padres' top two pitchers will be out of action.

Young has been bothered by inflammation in his pitching shoulder for his last four starts. He'll go on the DL on Friday. He had a second cortisone shot on Wednesday night.

Ace Jake Peavy was placed on the DL on Saturday, a day after learning he would be sidelined at least a month because of a strained tendon behind his right ankle.

Illini Keep Title Hopes Alive with 6-3 Win at Purdue

Illini reliever Lee Zerrusen (Teutopolis, Ill.) struck out Purdue slugger Dan Black with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to preserve Illinois' 6-3 win over the Boilermakers at Lambert Field as well as the Orange and Blue's Big Ten title hopes as they stand one game behind league-leading Minnesota heading into the Gophers' Friday night game at Penn State. Third baseman Dominic Altobelli (Oak Forest, Ill.) went 4-for-5 with two doubles and DH Willie Argo (Davenport, Iowa) drove was 3-for-4 with four RBIs as he moved to the No. 5 spot in the batting order.

Lang Named To BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honor Roll

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sophomore Michael Lang (Dumont, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. Lang was recognized after guiding Rutgers to four victories in six games last week.
