Rangers release Donnelly from minor deal (AP)

Former All-Star reliever Brendan Donnelly was released from his minor league contract by the Texas Rangers. Donnelly was a key setup man for the Angels during three trips to the playoffs from 2002-05 that included a World Series title. He became a free agent Thursday. The 37-year-old Donnelly had ligament replacement surgery in August 2007 while with the Red Sox and didn't pitch again until August...

Health, attendance among key Griffey incentives

Ken Griffey Jr. could get a total of $5 million this year in his return to Seattle if he stays healthy and fans flock to see him.

The Mariners have layered performance bonuses based upon plate appearances and attendance that could net Griffey an additional $3 million - on top of the $2 million in base salary that's in the one-year contract baseball's leading active home run hitter agreed to Saturday.

Rutgers Baseball Opens Season With Four-Game Series At Miami

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers baseball team will open its 2009 season with a four-game series against perennial national power Miami this weekend. The four-game series at the newly-named Alex Rodriguez Park begins with a 7:00 p.m. game Friday, followed by a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. Saturday and closing with a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday.

Braves complete $2.5M deal with OF Anderson

The Atlanta Braves completed a $2.5 million, one-year contract with Garret Anderson on Tuesday after he passed a physical.

The 36-year-old Anderson had spent his entire 15-year career with the Los Angeles Angels, where he made three All-Star appearances and batted .300 or better seven times.

With his new team, the left-handed hitter will likely platoon in left field with Matt Diaz.

Wikoff, Cappetta Named All-Tournament

Illinois junior shortstop Brandon Wikoff (Peoria, Ill.) was named to the Big East/Big Ten Challenge All-Tournament team and sophomore designated hitter Pete Cappetta (Lisle, Ill.) was named honorable mention All-Tournament by CollegeBaseball360.com. It is Wikoff's third career all-tournament honor, also receiving laurels at the 2008 QTI Baylor Classic and the 2007 Al Ogletree Classic, and it is Cappetta's first career honor.

Rutgers Baseball Team to Honor Winston This Season

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers baseball team will honor one of its heroes from years past during the 2009 season. The Scarlet Knights will wear hats with “DW” stitched on the side in honor of the late Darrin Winston, who passed away suddenly last August. One of the most decorated pitchers in Rutgers history, Winston pitched for the Scarlet Knights from 1985-88.

LHP Reyes makes Cardinals his 10th team (AP)

Left-hander Dennys Reyes and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to $3 million, two-year contract. The 31-year-old, 32-32 with a 4.28 ERA, is joining his 10th team. He spent the last three seasons with Minnesota and was 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA in a career-high 75 games last season, the most by a lefty in the AL.

Blue Jays CF Wells expects to miss 2 weeks

Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells expects to miss two weeks after an MRI showed he re-injured the left hamstring that kept him on the disabled list for a month late last season.

BTN announces baseball, softball schedule

The Big Ten Network announced its 2009 baseball and softball schedules on Tuesday, and Illinois is slated to appear three times in each sport. The BTN will broadcast 30 Big Ten baseball games, including the entire Big Ten Baseball Tournament and 25 Big Ten softball games this spring. Every game will be produced in high definition.
