Late Rally Lifts Blue to 3-2 Win

Junior shortstop Brandon Wikoff ripped a one-out double down the right-field line to drive in a pair of runs and scored on an error as the Blue squad used a three-run final inning to take a 3-2 win over the Orange and even the Orange and Blue World Series at one game apiece. The Blue squad won despite managing just five hits during the five-inning game.

Rutgers Baseball Announces 2009 Recruiting Class

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers head baseball coach Fred Hill announced the signing of five high school standouts to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. The 2008 signing class includes four pitchers – Tyler Gebler (Toms River, N.J.), Jerry Elsing (Montville, N.J.), Dan O’Neill (Garfield, N.J.) and Rob Smorol (Clarke, N.J.) – and shortstop Steve Nyisztor (Toms River, N.J.).

Nats offer installment plan for tickets (AP)

The Washington Nationals have come up with a recession-friendlier way to pay for season tickets: the installment plan. The Nationals announced Friday the creation of the Grand Slam E-Z Payment Plan, which allows fans to pay off their season tickets in monthly installments on their credit cards over six months.

Report: Proctor, Marlins reach 1-year, $750K deal

Right-hander Scott Proctor's birthday present is a contract with the Florida Marlins.

The former Los Angeles Dodgers reliever has agreed to a $750,000, one-year contract that includes $250,000 in incentives, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Friday. The person didn't want to be identified because the deal is contingent on Proctor passing a physical Monday.

Orange Tops Blue, 3-2, in Series Opener

The Orange squad topped the Blue, 3-2, in five innings, in the opener of the annual Orange and Blue World Series, thanks to four strong innings of work by starter Ben Reeser and a scoreless inning by Mike Sterk, who earned the save. Catcher Aaron Johnson drove in two runs and all three tallies came from the Nos. 1-3 hitters, Josh Parr, Joe Bonadonna and Dominic Altobelli.

Hill to be Inducted Into Verona High School Hall of Fame

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers head baseball coach Fred Hill will be inducted into the Verona High School Hall of Fame. Hill will be one of four individuals enshrined into the high school’s hall of fame, joining accomplished alumni Bob Charman, Class of 1953; athlete Norm Liedtke, Class of 1970, and Coach Al Rotella.

Diamondbacks, 1B Clark agree to 1-year deal

First baseman Tony Clark is returning to the Arizona Diamondbacks, agreeing Friday to an $800,000, one-year contract.

The 36-year-old Clark played for Arizona from 2005-2007 and had a prominent role on the 2007 NL West champions. He left after that season to sign with San Diego but returned to the Diamondbacks last July. Clark hit .225 with three home runs and 24 RBIs in 108 games with San Diego and Arizona last year.

Davis, Hudson Invited to Fall Leagues

Former Fighting Illini catcher Lars Davis and outfielder Kyle Hudson have been assigned to a pair of fall developmental leagues by their respective teams, the Colorado Rockies and the Baltimore Orioles. Davis will play for the Honolulu Sharks in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League, while Hudson will play in the Florida Instructional League after missing most of the 2008 season with a broken finger.

Indians acquire INF DeRosa from Cubs (AP)

After some debate and a trade, the Cleveland Indians have decided not to shift their infield. The club acquired versatile infielder Mark DeRosa to place third base on Wednesday, trading three minor leaguers to the Chicago Cubs. They dealt pitchers Jeff Stevens, Chris Archer and John Gaub for DeRosa, who played six different positions for the NL Central champions.

Former Astros All-Star Smith dead at 53

Dave Smith, a former All-Star closer who holds the Houston Astros record for games pitched, died Wednesday. He was 53.

Former big leaguer Tim Flannery said Smith apparently died of a heart attack, but the official cause of death wasn't known.

"He's gone. My tears are the rain," Flannery, the San Francisco Giants third base coach, told The Associated Press.
