2009 Season Preview

Following a record-setting 2007 which saw six starters drafted and another six more players graduate, seven newcomers saw extensive action in 2008. The combination of young, experienced players with a core of talented veterans brings much promise and high expectations for 2009 with the return of 22 letterwinners.

Toronto CF Wells will miss two weeks with injury

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) -- Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells expects to miss two weeks after an MRI showed he re-injured the left hamstring that kept him on the disabled list for a month late last season.

Source: Garret Anderson to join Braves (AP)

The Atlanta Braves shored up their outfield Sunday after being spurned by Ken Griffey Jr., reaching a preliminary agreement with Garret Anderson on a one-year deal. Anderson is expected to undergo a physical on Monday or Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn't been finalized.

Diamondbacks, 1B Clark agree to 1-year deal

First baseman Tony Clark is returning to the Arizona Diamondbacks, agreeing Friday to an $800,000, one-year contract.

The 36-year-old Clark played for Arizona from 2005-2007 and had a prominent role on the 2007 NL West champions. He left after that season to sign with San Diego but returned to the Diamondbacks last July. Clark hit .225 with three home runs and 24 RBIs in 108 games with San Diego and Arizona last year.

Fall Diamond Notes #2

Well Illini fans, we're approaching the end of October, which means the start of the season is just four short months away. Illinois Field is quiet now, as we wrapped up fall practice a couple of weeks ago and are now in the middle of offseason weightlifting and agility workouts.

Matthews Named to Preseason All-BIG EAST Baseball Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rutgers baseball team was picked to finish eighth out of 12 teams in the BIG EAST Conference in a vote by the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own team. Sophomore first baseman Jaren Matthews (Teaneck, N.J.) represented Rutgers on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.

A veteran of baseball's biggest stage, Joe Torre had his lines well rehearsed. No, he didn't write anything controversial. No, he didn't trash the clubhouse code. No, no regrets. On a snowy day in Manhattan, Torre was back in town Tuesday for his first signing session for "The Yankee Years," co-written by Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci.

Red Sox, C Josh Bard agree to 1-year deal

Josh Bard is getting another chance to catch on with the Boston Red Sox.

Bard agreed to a non-guaranteed, one-year contract with Boston, giving the Red Sox additional depth behind the plate. The deal announced Friday includes a club option for 2010.

Bard played seven games for the Red Sox in 2006, when he struggled to catch Tim Wakefield's knuckleball and was traded to San Diego along with reliever Cla Meredith for catcher Doug Mirabelli.
